Gulf Coast Drilled Shaft Contractors
Dependable Gulf Coast Foundation Engineers
For larger buildings, including those that will carry substantial weight, deep foundations are almost always necessary. When it comes to heavy-duty performance for commercial and industrial applications, there is almost no better choice than a foundation formed with drilled shafts. Drilled shafts, also known as drilled piers, can measure up to 150 feet deep with diameters of five feet wide or more. This gives them tremendous strength for both high axial and lateral-load foundations and makes them an optimal choice for a wide range of buildings.

How a Drilled Shaft Foundation Is Installed
Auger shaft foundations typically involve drilling and casting piers that measure up to around a foot in diameter or so. For drilled shaft foundations, those dimensions go up exponentially. These shafts can dive well over 100 feet into the earth, depending on your needs and soil, and each pier can measure several feet across.
A drilled shaft foundation is constructed largely the same way as other drilled or auger-formed shafts, but with a few key differences. Notably, with a drilled shaft, the rebar reinforcement cage is installed before the concrete is poured in place, whereas auger shafts usually do it after. Considering that each cage can weigh tens of thousands of pounds due to their sheer size, installing them before concrete pours makes far more sense.
Our Gulf Coast drilled shaft contractors can construct this type of foundation support in either soil or rock. For drilled shafts in soil, the resistance to load is developed along the perimeter of the shaft through friction and also bearing on the end of the shaft. In certain situations, the capacity of the shaft can be increased by increasing the size of the base of the drilled shaft.
